I’ve started my company La MJC ten years ago, with my friend Julien.
If Julien left the boat in 2004 to work for Nike, we are still brothers from another mother and La MJC is still there.
Lots of people who read this blog probably don’t know what is the meaning behind La MJC letters.
Julien and I were looking for a good name to use when we were doing things at the beginning of the 2000’s, from styling for fashion magazines to giving advices to brands and stores we were close to, and organizing events and parties in Paris.
La MJC for La Michael & Julien Company popped quickly in. Let me try to explain why…
It’s a bit hard to translate in English, but La MJC in French means La Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture – The House for Youth and Culture. They are plenty of them all around the country. Those places are supposed to bring culture to kids and that’s exactly what we wanted to do with Julien at this time. Our initial idea was to help the brands we liked to better understand the actors of the so called street culture, the one we were in love, and the one we grew up with.
We were so passionate, we decided to launch a company together, without really knowing what we wanted to do ! The only thing we were sure about was our hobbies and knowledge of the street were so strong that they will become the key to help our future clients to make things happen in Paris.
10 years later, I’m still running the company, helped by some good folks who gave me the possibility to develop new projects althrough the years, from the regretted webstore wesoldout.com to the sucessful All Gone books. Even if the beginnings were very hard but also an amazing lesson, La MJC is way more stronger today and I feel very proud to celebrate its first decade.
From now on, I will try to blog on a regular basis some vintage images to celebrate our little history. The flick above is from 2002. Almost 10 years ago.
Before our current motto Vivre Sans Temps Mort, we used to say We are The Future. Looking at the picture, I think we were right.
